I'm conflicted. I've only had the Skullet for a couple of weeks so don't have a lot of experience, but so far I'm only mildly impressed.
It does looks great and will be a conversation starter at any camp site but that doesn't matter if it doesn't work well.
First, like others have stated, for the money it really should come with a carrying case. I've solved that for the skottle itself by buying a bag designed for jumper cables (fits perfectly if you get the right size). I haven't yet bought a bag for the tripod or the heater unit but they are needed.
Speaking of the tripod, it really seems like an afterthought. It works but feels flimsy and not all the legs have similar tension on them. It's an adventure to open or close without pinching your fingers. Hopefully it lasts awhile but if I had bought this as a separate accessory I would not be happy for what Ignik is charging.
The skottle (skullet) itself is fine and I have no complaints. The quality is similar to the big brand cast iron cookware company and will work fine although at some point I will probably machine the cook surface to remove the casting (what makes it bumpy). To be fair the product as delivered is what I would expect for the price and most people will be perfectly happy with it.
The stove is obviously the most important part and here's where I'm still trying to figure it out. The instructions on usage are vague and it's not clear the different settings for heat vs cooking mode. In fact it really gives no guidance on settings for cooking at all. I was testing it in gusty wind on the patio and it stayed lit, which is good, but the flame produced a ton of soot. I would maybe expect this when in the heat mode, but turning it down for cooking still seemed like a very yellow, sooty, flame. I would expect the cooking mode to burn a clean, hot blue flame but that hasn't been my experience. Maybe because of the wind? Maybe because none of the instructions mention anything about the suggested settings for cooking so maybe I'm just trying to use it wrong? There seems to be a detent and markings that would indicate you're going from cooking to heating mode, but I so far haven't been able to see any difference other than in the height of the flame.
The mechanism to raise and lower the stove is also a bit clunky. Like everything else it works but there are some sharp edges and it's not very smooth sliding up and down. You have to try and hold the bottom with one hand while trying to pull the top up with the other. Since it's a triangle it's hard to get consistent pulling pressure all around and the unit doesn't like being pulled at an angle so it tends to bind.
Bottom line, I was excited to get the Skullet and in the long run I think I'll be happy with it but right now it feels like a first generation product (which it is). I know it may sound like I'm not thrilled but I do think it's a decent product. If you shop around you will not find a combination of heater and stove for the same money. Ignik cornered a market here. They just need to continue to improve a couple of basic things to make it a great product in future iterations.
